Another lesson from the teachers for the 2nd team. Thirds in a Westland spin.
On Monday evening Wellington squash club 2nd team entertained Taunton School and came away smarting after another defeat. James Luard stared slowly in his first game and looked well out of sorts losing it 5-9. However once the pullover and tracksuit were removed things picked up and he won the second game 9-5. There was a minor dispute between the marker Brian Davenport and the Taunton player which helped to liven up proceedings. James maintained his composure and secured a win with a 9-6, 9-7 win in the last two games. Phil Hobbs played next against a very useful no.2. Phil was not up to speed at all and crashed out 1-9,2-9, 0-9. Mike Broom went on third and could get his game together in the first game and lost 2-9. In the second Mike was more determined and at one point held a 7-5 but lost the game 9-7. The third game was very similar with Mike holding a 6-4 lead but losing out 6-9 to lose 3-0. Brian Davenport was fourth on and after losing the first game 8-10 after looking like a winner he succumbed very quickly in the next two games losing them 2-9, 2-9. Finally Phil Griffith came on to see if some pride could be salvaged. His opponent was a new face in the Taunton team and clearly not a regular squash player. Phil had little trouble in securing a 9-4, 9-4, 9-4 win. The final score was Wellington 2nd team 6 Taunton School 13.
Wellington 3rd team were also at home playing a rearranged fixture with Westlands. Martin Williams was first on and looked to be heading for a comfortable win after the first three game scores of 9-7, 6-9, 9-7 and with Martin leading 8-2 in the fourth. However, Martin could put away a winning shot when it counted and he lost the fourth game 8-10. For what ever reason Martin was not playing drop shots and kept hitting the ball back to his opponent. Martin lost the deciding game 6-9. Mike Kavanagh was next on at no.4 and he lost 3-0 in very quick time with game scores of 1-9, 7-9, 2-9. Greg Harrison was next on and looked to be cruising to a good win after winning the first two games 9-1, 9-5. For some unexplained reason he lost his control in the third and lost the game 2-9. From then on his opponent was rejuvenated and won the next two games 9-2, 9-4 for a 3-2 win. Skipper Chris Short was next on playing another useful touch player. The first two games were shared but Chris could not muster his game and lost the next two 6-9, 4-9. Finally young Andy Hobbs playing at no.1 came on. His opponent is a well known hard hitting player with good speed around the court. Andy played really well in the first game and was hard done by to actually lose it 8-10. From then on Andy was struggling with a muscle problem in his right leg and lost the next two games 2-9, 3-9. The final match score was Wellington 3rd team 5 Westlands 18.
