Wellington Squash club 2nd team slump to another defeat.

On Monday evening Wellington squash club 2nd team visited Westlands for the penultimate round of league matches. Mike Broom started the match and for the first time took a game off the Westlands no.1. Unfortunately he was unable to maintain the required standard and lost 3-1, 9-3, 0-9,1-9, 3-9. Phil Griffith at no.5 had a comfortable win against his opposite number winning 9-0, 9-7, 9-2. James Luard continued his tussle with the Westlands no.4. James narrowly lost the first game 8-9. He then lost the second 4-9 but came back strongly to win the third 9-2. James was ahead in the fourth game but let his lead slip and lost it 7-9 to go down 1-3. Brian Davenport at no.3 knew he was in for a hard game having lost to his opponent 3-0 last week. Brian lost the first two games 4-9, 5-9 but after some mid game advice from Phil Hobbs took the third game 9-2. The tactics of the third game could not be maintained and Brian lost the fourth game 3-9 to lose 3-1. Finally Phil Hobbs took to the court. He got off to a slow start losing the first game 2-9. He came back strongly in the second to win it easily 9-1. However, his opponent was getting around the court very well and started to play some good drop shots from the back of the court in the third game which he won 9-3. The fourth game was a tight affair with both players running into the other and some minor theatrical work by Phil Hobbs on one occasion. Phil could not quite make it and lost the fourth game 7-9 to go down 3-1.
The final score was Westlands 15 Wellington 2nds 7.
With the final league match away at Huish in three weeks time Wellington 2nd team will need a good win to avoid the wooden spoon.
